90’s Cruise – Let’s Go!!

Long before 2025 threw us a curve ball that landed me in the hospital with a pulmonary embolism and a subsequent second hospital stay for a surgery to remove my boggy uterus (the cause of previously mentioned embolism), we booked The 90’s Cruise for this January. I don’t recall how Tom came across this cruise, but we felt it would be right up our alley with concerts on the ship from 90’s bands such as Smashmouth, Better Than Ezra, TLC, En Vogue, Kid ‘n Play, and more. The ports were two locations we have visited before, but we didn’t care. We were going for the music.

When I booked our airfare I knew it could be a gamble booking a flight with a connection in January, but my cost conscious self decided to take that gamble and booked a flight leaving Milwaukee connecting in Atlanta with the final destination in Tampa. Well as Mother Nature goes she decided to have a major ice storm across the Southern portion of the United States. Delta had a deal that due to the weather we could cancel our flights without incurring a fee and we could use our flight credits within the next year. Since Tom is planning on going to Atlanta for a conference later this spring, we knew we could turn around and use the credits right away, so we decided to cancel and re-book a direct flight on Southwest. Our original fight would have gotten us into Tampa at 6:53p.m. and our new flight had us landing at 11:55a.m., so although we had a much earlier start to our day than we had planned, we were able to spend a nice afternoon and evening in Tampa.

Our plane was delayed due to mechanical issues, but since we were now on a direct flight this did not get me worked up. On the plane I sat next to a lovely woman named Kate. We chatted the entire flight and learned we are both similar in age and both have experienced some major medical situations. She had a stroke and has subsequent memory issues from that. It was interesting to share our journeys. Once we arrived in Tampa we went straight to our hotel to check-in and drop our stuff off. We asked the lady at the front desk, Lori, for restaurant advice and she practically orgasmed over a burning cheese appetizer at a Greek restaurant.

We walked up and down the main drag and checked out several restaurants but ultimately decided to take Lori’s advice and eat at Acropolis, the Greek restaurant. We were happy to get a table outside where the weather was pleasant and the sun felt great. I had a Cosmo and Tom got some other tropical drink. I went to taste it but he failed to tell me there was coconut in it. After taking the sip, not being a fan of coconut at all, I made my traditional face that clearly indicated that I didn’t like it. That drink was all his! Of course we had to order the burning cheese since Lori recommended it so highly. It was pretty good but I don’t think it was as good as she had made it out to be. I had the souvlaki and Tom had a chicken gyro . Both were pretty good and we were quite satisfied with our meals and drinks.

After dinner we went for a short walk to a park so I could do a virtual geocache. Tom even helped with locating the required information. Close to the park was a stop for the free street car so we took the opportunity to ride it. We rode it in both directions so that it would take us back to our starting point and so that Tom could get a little extra nap time in. LoL On the way back to the hotel we stopped at a mini-mart to pick-up some snacks and drinks to take with us on the ship and then headed back to the hotel to call it a night.
