Next Up – Belize!

The time has come for my next winter escape. This year Linda, Laurie, and Pete have ventured off to Belize to escape the Wisconsin winter. They have been here since mid-January and I was happy that I am able to join them for their last 10 days.

I had an early morning flight out of Milwaukee with a couple hour layover in Dallas. In Dallas, although I was seated in my gate area the entire time, I didn’t hear the boarding announcement for my flight. I was playing the New York Times games on my phones when I got a push notification that my flight was boarding. I was a little surprised to see that since I was sitting in the area. They were on boarding Group 4 when I moved out of my seat and I was boarding Group, 5 so the timing was actually perfect. The flight was uneventful and soon we were landing in Belize.

I got through immigration with ease and soon I was outside the airport looking for my transfer to the ferry. I was supposed to find a guy in a grey button down shirt with the logo on the top right hand corner of the shirt and or someone holding a sign with my name. No such individual was found. I waited for awhile and walked around the area and tried calling the company but the call didn’t go through. After texting with Lauri I just got in a cab and went, otherwise I was in danger of missing the ferry. I made it onto the ferry with only about 2 minutes to spare before it pulled away from the dock!

The ferry took an hour and 45 minutes which included a stop at one other location before we pulled into San Pedro. By now it was 6:17p.m. and I couldn’t believe I had been travelling for over 12 hours. Pete and Laurie met me at the dock and we drove back in the rented golf car (the preferred method of transportation on the caye) to our AirBnB. We are in a 2 bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor right on the main drag. We dumped my stuff off and then Pete, Laurie, and I walked down the street to a little taco stand they have previously visited. I was starving as I hadn’t really eaten much of anything since my bowl of cereal before I left the house. We had to wait a bit as there were a bunch of orders in front of us. I don’t remember exactly how it played out but somehow I got a free chicken taco because it was the last of the chicken for the night. I also ordered 3 pork tacos. We took them back to the apartment to eat. They were super tasty!

After I unpacked I joined the gang in watching the last couple of episodes of Black Bird which is an American true crime miniseries on Apple TV. I had not seen the first four episodes but they were able to quickly bring me up to speed so the final 2 episodes made sense. I liked it and would consider re-watching it with Tom at some point so I can actually watch it from the beginning.

With the show over it was about 9:30 and Pete and Laurie were headed off to bed and Linda started to make her way there too. Linda has a king size bed so my options are to either share with her, or couch it. My intention was to share the bed and that’s where I started, but we were both laying in bed and chit chatting when she said she wasn’t tired and was going to get up and watch something else. I immediately jumped up and joined her because although I was tired from the early morning and travelling, I’m not used to going to bed that early. After a tech support call to Tom, we were able to get my Netflix account added to the TV and Linda and I watched the movie “Jay Kelly” starring George Clooney. While watching the movie I was laying on the couch with the intention that if I fell asleep during the movie I would just stay there. I did not fall asleep and I felt myself getting more congested during the movie. I have been fighting a little something since Monday so when the movie was over I told Linda I was not going to move back into bed with her and stay on the couch instead so as not to get her sick or distburb her. I had no problem falling asleep and slept the night through.
