Driving North Iceland
We got a slow start to our morning after a short night’s sleep (so hard to go to bed at a decent hour when it stays light out all the time). We left the AirBnB at 10:00ish and began our 6 hour drive to our next location. With no pre-planned stops for the road-trip, we just set out to see what we would see. What we came upon upon was some beautiful scenery. We made stops along the way to snap some pictures and capture a couple of geocaches. So bummed that Kristin and I couldn’t find two of the ones we looked for. It was super windy and cold, which did not aid our search. That kind of weather is not motivating to hang around and look for a long time. We did find two others though.
One of our favorite stops was at Grafarkirkja, a small chapel built in the late 17th century (re-built in 1953). The lighting was perfect for photos. When we stopped for gas, we grabbed a hot dog for lunch. We had read in previous blogs that Iceland gas station hot dogs were good, and they were!
We got to our AirBnB around 7:00. The house we are renting has a nice kitchen and grill, so we decided that we should relax and eat-in. We tossed around getting a pizza from Dominoes or possibly grilling, but after Kristin and I wandered the grocery store we ultimately decided on pre-packaged raviolo and tortellini and salad. I picked out a mushroom ravioli for Tom and I, and Kristin picked the tortellini for her and Brandon, but we said we could really have a little of each. Kristin and I served ourselves first and when the boys came to join us we looked at their plates and immediately started laughing. They had no idea why we were laughing so hard, but it was funny that Brandon had taken the ravioli and Tom the tortellini. They had taken the exact opposite of what we thought they were going to eat. It probably wasn’t that funny, but for some reason it really struck Kristin and I to the point we had tears. Tom just thought there was something up with the salad dressing because that’s what was in his hand when we busted out laughing. It was really nice to have a “home-cooked” meal.
This AirBnB also has a hot tub (or hot pot as they call it). We had to fill the tub when we got there (and it took awhile to fill which is another reason we left the boys behind when we went to the grocery store). There are no jets in the hot tub, but it was really nice to sit and relax and enjoy some adult beverages. Tomorrow is white water rafting day!
