The Road Less Traveled

June 14, 2017

We took our time getting ready this morning while Brandon and Kristin enjoyed
breakfast and a walk around the little city. It was nice to relax since Tom and I
had stayed up late the night before working on our blog entries and going through
our photos. For breakfast I ate leftover salad from our family dinner in Aukeryi
and Tom had a lettuce and peanut butter sandwich for breakfast. That sounds so
gross, but apparently he used to eat these sandwiches as a kid.

We left town a little after 11:00 and was happy that the clouds had lifted so that
we were not driving in the same fog as when we arrived. We discovered that we had
missed a lot of scenery in the fog. We saw some waterfalls and some sort of body
water with ice floating in that. We kept saying that we had no idea that any of
that was there yesterday because of the fog.

Our drive to our next destination was just three hours, but we did pull over a few times to take pictures of the beautiful scenery. When we got to the intersection to take 939 versus Route 1 Kristin suggested that we not follow the GPS to take 939 and take Route 1 instead. We asked her what was on 939, and she read out from someone’s blog post that it was a beautiful, scenic, adrenal rush and one of the best drives in Iceland. So we didn’t listen to her and took the scenic route of 939. It really was quite beautiful and nothing to be worried about. At one of the locations a red chair was mounted to a pile of rocks. I said certainly there must be a geocache here, and there was!

We arrived to our hotel in Hofn (The Milk Factory . . . it used to be a Milk Factory) around 3:00 and were able to check into our hotel. We didn’t have a lot of plans for this city, so we spent some time researching guided glacier walks for the morning, and booked one.

Kristin suggest that we walk from our hotel into the city, but after taking a few
steps in the cold wind we opted to drive instead. This turned out to be a good
idea. We found a couple of scenic points to look at the glaciers across the way.
Here I also saw there were about three geocaches in the town. We didn’t go to the
one that was closest when I looked because it felt too cold, so we went to the next
one. Kristin found the cache, as I was not even in the right location. After this
since we didn’t have much else planned, everyone gave me the ok to go do the other
caches in town, and we even went back to the first one we passed up. Even though
they all give me hard time about geocaching, I think they had fun.

After we had found all the immediate area caches we headed to dinner at the #1
restaurant in Hofn know for it’s langoustine (mini-lobsters). We had another very
good meal of langoustine in a cream sauce. It had started raining while we were at
dinner so once again we were happy that we hadn’t walked. We headed back to the
Milk Factory to go through pictures and write this blog. Looking forward to playing
a little Phase 10 after I post this.
