Beach Day in St. Kitts
I stayed up late last night to finish the blog, but I was bound and determined that we would be out the door at a decent time this morning so as not to waste the day away. Thankfully the weather looked like we were going to have a good day and with no grey clouds or rain. We were on the beach at Shipwreck by 10:15 so I think we did pretty good. We paid for two chairs and a thatched umbrella covering for some shade.
There is a reef lining the entire beach and Tom and I decided to snorkel right away. This was a much better snorkeling location than the waters on Cockleshell Beach. We saw lots of different fish include a couple of puffer fish and 5 squids. The squids were really neat. We snorkeled almost the entire length of the beach which was quite a distance. We decided to get out and walk the beach back.
Back in our chairs we enjoyed the remaining beers that we had bought at the grocery store. I’m glad I thought of bringing them with us. They stayed surprising cold in my camelback backpack (no I did not pour the beer in the bladder, just used the backpack to transport the bottles). We laid out and finally soaked in some rays. It felt so nice with it being about 82 degrees with a nice breeze.
We decided to eat lunch and I had the jerk chicken and Tom had the fish tacos. Once again our meals were excellent. At the table next to us was a group of 6 from Lake Geneva, WI. We talked to them a bit about their small cruise experience. They were currently on a cruise with Emerald Cruise line and they said it held only about 100 passengers. I had looked into this type of cruise before and was extremely interested to hear about their experience. I think this would be something fun to do with a group of people.
After lunch I left Tom to relax under the shaded umbrella while I went back to “Garbage” beach by the cruise port. I’m glad he felt comfortable with me going by myself. I did turn on my cell service so I could text him with updates of when I arrived and left. It only took 15 minutes to get there and soon I was back to scouring the “garbage”. I was so thrilled to find a small piece of orange glass (a really rare color) and even more thrilled when I found a marble. Then 2 minutes later I found a second marble, quickly followed by a third!!! I was so excited to finally have marble success! Of course I texted Tom right away with the good news. I stayed and hunted for an hour and a half before I drove back to Shipwreck to pick up Tom.
I got back at 4:20 and Tom was ready to head back to the hotel. The shade was slipping from his covered area and he was tired of listening to an annoying loud American older female who was complaining about somebody taking her towel and clips. Back at the hotel we went down to the beach to take our traditional vacation photo and then got ready for dinner.
Tonight we went back to Reggae Beach Bar for the famous Lobsterfest. We had reservations for 7:00 and when we got seated we were seated in the very corner of the restaurant that had absolutely lost all the ambience and the vibe of the place. It felt like we were sitting back by the dumpsters with the flood light that was shining. When our waitress came over, Tom told her it was our anniversary and asked if there was a better seating location. The waitress, Maya, immediately said “Let’s go look!” Tom went with her while I hung back. Soon she was waving at me to come over. She directed me to a table right near the front by the band that Tom was sitting at. I think she probably would have done this for us if it was our “anniversary” or not, but I’m so glad we moved. The band was so good and even though it was louder up-front it was exactly the vibe that Tom and I enjoy. For the meal we got to pick three of the following: Lobster, Grilled Fish, BBQ Shrimp, BBQ Chicken, or BBQ Ribs. Tom and I both chose the lobster, fish, and shrimp. While we waited for our food we enjoyed rum punches and listening to the band. They really reminded of us of the Eddie Butts band in Milwaukee. They were really jamming. When our food was about to come out our waitress directed us to the buffet of salad, rice, vegetables, plantains, sweet deep fried pancake ball things. We loaded up and went back to the table. A few minutes later Maya brought our main dish. The food was very tasty. We were not disappointed at all with the food or our evening. I think if we stayed in the back corner our feelings would have been different. Once we were done eating we got up and danced to a couple of songs. It was so much fun!
It’s hard to believe the trip is coming to an end and we head back tomorrow. Our flight isn’t until 2:00 so we do have some time in the morning. Finding the marbles today only increased my itch to go back and look again. I have an alarm set for 6:00 so I can go on the hunt for a couple for hours before I have to get back to shower, pack, and check-out.
