Belize Day 8 – Great Blue Hole Adventure

I woke up around 7:00 and felt pretty rested. I honestly still felt full from the nachos yesterday so I didn’t eat anything at the house and got ready for the day. Linda and I walked to town and ate at La Sanpedrana Bar and Grill on the beach. We shared an order of fry jacks, which is a staple breakfast food in Belize, consisting of deep-fried dough pieces that are crispy on the outside and soft, fluffy, and slightly hollow on the inside. We put a little powdered surgar on them and dipped them in jelly. They were very good. How did I wait until the last day I was here to try them? Luckily we left with plenty of time before my excursion because I forget how slow the service on the caye can be. By the time we were done at the restaraunt it was time to take the short stroll over to the airport for my Great Blue Hole tour. The Great Blue Hole is a massive, circular marine sinkhole measuring ~1,000 feet across and over 400 feet deep and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I got checked in with no problem and had to wait about 45 minutes for my tour to start. There was no more than 10 of us on the flight and I got to sit right behind the pilot. It was a pretty smooth take off. On our way to the Great Blue Hole we flew over Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley where we snorkeled the other day . It took about 20 minutes to get to the Blue Hole. The pilot made several passes and made sure both sides of the plane got a good view. On the way back we also got a good look at Caye Caulker and a shipwreck. Overall I’m really glad I made the decision to do this tour. I really enjoyed it.

On the way back I stopped in a couple of stores and to include the Belikin Beer store where I found a Christmas ornament I bought for this trip’s souvenir. I also doubled back and got my picture with the San Pedro sign that they finally uncovered since Carnival is over.

Back at the apartment I was feeling quite toasty from my walk back so I actually got into the pool. It felt great! I then soaked in the sun and finished the book I was reading.

For dinner we went to the Black Orchid Restaraunt, which was the restaurant of where I found my first geocache in the caye. I had an excellent Key Lime Martini. We also had the creamy shrimp dip appetizer and I had the Dukunu Shrimp which is an authentic Belizean dish of shrimp in a cream sauce over sweet dukunu (pronounced du-kew-no, made from sweet corn). The dukunu has the consistency of polenta. My dish was outstanding . . . very good!

We came back and Linda and I did a load of wash and watched the movie “Palmer” on Apple TV starring Justing Timberlake. It was from 2021 and it was pretty good. With the movie over I finished packing and we put on one more move “Coda” on Apple TV.

It’s hard to belive our time in Belize is coming to an end. It will be a long travel day tomorrow with our ferry back to Belize City leaving at 8:30a.m. and our flight landing back in Milwaukee at 10:07p.m. It’s been a nice winter escape.
