Day 6 Belize – Secret Beach

I woke up around 8:45 and played the New York Times games before I made myself an egg and cheese omelet and got ready for the day. My first order of business was to finish the book I have been reading. It was a good read and the first book I’ve read in a long time.

Linda and I headed out about Noon to do the remaining stops on the Adventure Lab cache. It was a little frustrating though because we couldn’t get to to one of the stops. I navigated to where it showed on the map but the road didn’t appear to go through and the locals in the area basically shooed us away as it did look like I was in a residential area. I will have to check it out on Google Maps satellite view. We decided to move on and go to the next stop at Secret Beach. Linda had previously been to the beach with Pete and Laurie so she knew the lay of the land. We were able to answer the Adventure Lab Cache pretty easily. We didn’t bring swim or beach stuff so we just found a picnic table to sit at one of the many bar/restaurants in the area. We ordered a soda and beer and waited over 30 minutes. The waiter never came back with them so we decided to just leave.

On the way back we stopped back at the restaraunt by the airport that we had passed up the other day, Carlo & Ernie’s Runway Bar. This time a waiter came over right away. Per his suggestion I got a mushroom swiss burger and Linda got the chicken nachos. The burger was better than the burger I had at the other place, but nothing to write home about. Glad I had the opportunity to try it though because I would have always wondered about it.

Back at the apartment I decided to research a tour to The Great Blue Hole which is a massive underwater sinkhole and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The best way to see the hole is from the air. Linda said she would be game for it, but Pete and Laurie weren’t interesed. Linda also said she thought it would be best by helicopter rather than by plane. There was one company that offered helicopter rides so I gave them a call and was shocked when they quoted me $1,500/person for the trip. Ah yeah . . .that’s not going to work. Next I researched by going by regular plane and of the two companies, only one had availability while we are still here, but they only had one spot available. Linda said it was ok if I wanted to do it, so I went ahead and booked it for Wednesday.

Not long after I got my plans solidified for The Blue Hole, the power went out around 5:00. I decided to grab another book off the shelf and sat outside and read until it got too dark to see. The power was still out so Laurie and I walked to the corner store (that was on generator power) and bought some candles and a lighter. Laurie, Linda, and I played a game of Swoop by candlelight and I came out the winner. We also played a game of Sticks that Linda won. By now it was after 9:00 and the power was still out. I went out on the patio and called Tom and as we were talking the power came back on. We were thrilled that it was back and we weren’t going to have a hot sweaty night.
