Grenada Forts

Today was all about exploring the town of St. George’s. We started with a couple of forts that were within walking distance with each other. At Fort Frederick we just walked right in and were probably the only people on the grounds. The fort is in ruins and any tourist signage there was, is not maintained. We could tell there was once a restaurant on site, but that too is now in ruins. From Fort Frederick we walked up the hill to Fort Matthew. This fort is being maintained and cost $2/person to enter. Here there was signage to tell us what we were looking at. As a bonus, there was a geocache hidden on the grounds that I was easily able to find.

Our plan after the fort was to go into the town of St. George’s to do some shopping, but after being stuck in traffic due to one of the political parties caravaning through the streets (think truck in front with a bunch of people in the flatbed and a speaker blaring with their message and a bunch of supporters following in their vechicles), not being able to find parking, and then accidentally hitting someone’s sideview mirror on a one-way street (the person was in the vehicle and we verifed everything was ok before moving on) we decided to skip it and just head to Umbrella’s Beach Bar on Grand Anse Beach. The driving had been stressful and I was ready to get out and relax with a drink and a good meal. I had a really good chicken bacon club sandwich and lemon berry spritzer (white wine, raspberry, vodka, lemonade).

After we were done eating we took a walk on the beach towards the Grand Anse Craft & Spice Market for some shopping. The shops were tiny and of your typical souvenir variety. Erica and Amanda each bought a little something but nothing jumped out and screamed “Buy me!”, so I walked away empty handed. On the way back we had a nice dog following us, but then it turned into three dogs following us and one of those dogs was kind of nipping at us. We walked on the hotel property behind a little fence and lost the dogs for a little bit, but then they rejoined us before we finally lost them again.

When we got back to our BnB we all felt pretty hot so we headed down to the beach. Erica and Amanda went for a swim while I walked in the water looking for treasures. We saw a beautiful sunset before we headed back to the BnB to watch the Brewer’s game.

We didn’t have a problem getting the game on Amanda’s device the past couple of days and we didn’t even think about setting it up early, so we turned it on with about 5 minutes before the start of the game. Unfortunately it would not connect. Amanda tried several different things but it wasn’t working so we walked down to The Old Skool Pub where we had watched Game 2. Unfortunately the bartender who knew how to get the game on the tv wasn’t working and the other person working didn’t know how to do it, so we walked back to the BnB to try to get the game. Amanda continued to persist and it looked like we had a glimmer of hope but it just wouldn’t connect. Erica gave us updates on the score while we just let the tv buffer. Eventually we gave up and agreed to go to the kitchen to play Swoop. Just as we picked our cards the tv stopped the buffer and the game came on. It was the middle of the fifth and tied 4-4 so we felt like the game was basically just beginning for us. We never went back to the game of Swoop and it’s still on the table so maybe we will pick it up tomorrow. We were so excited to watch the Brewers win Game 4 of the NLDS and that they are going to the World Series! I remember the win in 1982 that sent them to the Series and I have no doubt that this will be a memory that will stick with me for life. Go Brewers!
